Laura is the latest member we are lucky enough to have on the HPN advisory board. She has a Degree in Medical Laboratory  Science, with a Masters in Haematology and is currently the applications specialist in  haematology,  Coagulation,  urinalysis  and Data management for Beckman Coulter.

We asked Laura a few questions to introduce her to the HPN family:

When and how did you first become interested in nutrition?
I became interested in training and nutrition after having my last child. I gained 35kgs during my pregnancy following all the usual healthy advice and exercising up to my due date (I was a kickboxing instructor in my spare time).  I found the weight really hard to shift, even 6 months post partum I was still 40kgs over my perceived healthy weight and measuring 105kgs on the scales.  I looked into all the various diets around and played with weight watchers, low fat etc.  I managed to lose the extra weight but also lost my joy of life, my energy levels were rock bottom. I found it hard to recover from crossfit sessions and my hormones were nearly non existent   This is when I turned to HPN and Cliff and got my act together, the results I got from following his advice was a turning point and piqued my interest in the high-fat carb appropriate methodologies practiced at HPN.

What is the silliest nutrition myth you’ve ever heard of?
The silliest nutrition myth I have heard to date is that the HcG diet is a good sustainable diet to lose weight and get healthy!!

What is your go-to easy mid week meal?
Anything I can chuck in the slow cooker in the morning.  For example some stock, a red onion, carrot, a dash of ACV, some herbs and a whole chicken. Its ready to for dinner that night for the family and there is usually some left over for lunches the next day.

What are your top 3 tips for staying healthy and happy?
1. Drink plenty of water.
2. Eat enough whole unprocessed foods to achieve your goals whether that be to better your health and wellbeing or to lose some body fat.
3. Find an activity you enjoy and can stick to, don’t be afraid to try new things until you find your niche.

Favourite way to sweat?
Weight training from the traditional bodybuilding routines to my current favourite powerlifting.

Biggest food weakness?
Chocolate!!!
