The Holistic Performance Nutrition annual conference is coming up in November and we are super excited to share with you our presenters! First off the rank is the amazing Caryn Zinn who is bringing us her expertise in nutrition. If you haven't met Caryn before, have a read of what she is all about.
1. How did you become involved in the health industry?
After studying a science degree, many moons ago, I trained as a dietitian, which naturally led me to the health industry. My first job in NZ was as a public health dietitian in Whangarei, where I lived for 4 years. I then moved to Auckland into the world of academia, where I now integrate my work in the sports performance and the public health nutrition fields, all while still keeping up with my private practice in these areas.
2. What do you enjoy most about what you do?
My job is varied, sometimes too varied I think, but overall I enjoy the autonomy in my job, that is the freedom to explore areas of nutrition in teaching, research and practice as I see fit (as long as they are evidence-based). I also enjoy the diversity of people that cross my path each day.
3. How would you describe your philosophy about being fit and healthy?
My philosophy is this: Eat whole food that is minimally processed and packaged; do some exercise that you enjoy on most days of the week (preferably in the outdoors); get good amounts of sleep each night; take the time to relax and do nothing; be positive and make the most of each day.
4. What’s your typical meal for…
First thing upon waking: nothing
Morning: yoghurt, berries, nut / seed mix with a dollop of peanut / almond butter and goji berries
Lunch: Big salad with lots of vegetables, eggs or salmon, and fresh herbs, liberal oil (olive or fennel-flavoured)
Dinner: Roast chicken stuffed with lemon and rosemary, served with roast vegetables (beetroot / pumpkin / courgette / onions)
Snacks or sweets: Chocolate at night (too much of it :( ), ideally dark, but not always.
5. Do you have any daily tips and strategies you recommend your clients implement to keep them living at a lean, fit and healthy body composition?
Focus on eating whole food that is minimally processed and packaged. To do this in a sustained way, you need to be organised and know that it’s for life. Make sure you really know the place of treats and alcohol in your life. Enjoy the exercise that you do, as it will make you want to do it; do it regularly.
6. What have been your biggest achievements to date?
Completing a PhD, being part of a great team that wrote What The Fat? Becoming a registered dietitian who advocates for LCHF (low carb, healthy fat) nutrition, despite it going against everything I’ve come to know in my nutrition career.
7. Do you have any piece of advice for our readers who are struggling with their eating habits and their body image?
For people struggling with their eating habits, go with whole food, as eating this way is far superior to any other, whatever your goal. Know that it does require a substantial shift in thinking and living. Do the hard yards at the front end (good planning, shopping, regularly) and get organised to make it easy for yourself long term.
For people struggling with their body image: Work out what it is that will help you achieve your goals and do it (it might be talking to a suitable person – friend or professional; or it might be finding the support you need to help you make and sustain change). Above all else, never compare yourself to the person next to you. For want of sounding cheesy, read the first verse of the serenity prayer for some good grounding: Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
